Much is made of the 70s as the decade of the auteur-director. Every bit as important is the stable of actors that each prominent director surrounded himself with, sometimes even sharing among the amazing talents that presented themselves. One constantly comes back to Al Pacino and Robert Deniro as inseparable from Coppola and Scorsese, respectively (though an argument can be made that Al was also instrumental in launching the career of my favorite auteur, Sidney Lumet).

Small government's great, unless you want a huge military. The free market rocks, unless you've got bankers to bailout. Government intrusion is bad, unless you want to spy on Americans. Freedom is fine, unless it's torture time. Habeas Corpus? Great for Christians. Welcome to the GOP, where rights are privileges, and judges are activists. The constitution's a great talking point, but the smell of money and the tip of a gun is how to get things done.

The British experimental theatre company Complicite was founded in 1983 by Simon McBurney, Annabel Arden, and Marcello Magni. The company's work—usually created jointly by the performers and directors—combines realistic and stylized acting with narrative text, movement, music, and visual art; major influences include Jacques Lecoq and Vsevolod Meyerhold.
Their productions often involve dazzling use of technology, such as projection and cameras, as well as lyrical and philosophical contemplation of serious themes.
